Am I Wrong for Refusing to Let My Daughters Get Their Hair Cut?
A mother has shared her family dispute online after her mother-in-law demanded that her three daughters cut their long hair for a wedding.
The girls were supposed to be bridesmaids at the wedding, which their grandmother was paying for. However, the mother-in-law insisted that all three girls cut their hair to shoulder length before the event.
The mother and her husband refused because their daughters loved their long hair and had no wish to cut it.
Things became more tense when the grandmother contacted the oldest daughter without speaking to her parents first. She tried to convince the girl to agree to the haircut and warned that she could lose her place as a bridesmaid if she refused.
When the parents found out, they were upset that the grandmother had put pressure on their daughter. They decided that the family would no longer attend the wedding.
The sister-in-law later took the dispute online, accusing the couple of making a big deal out of a simple haircut. She felt they were being unreasonable and causing needless family drama.
However, the mother and her husband believed their daughters should not have to change their appearance just to take part in a wedding.
From the mother’s point of view, the issue was never just about hair. It was about respecting her daughters’ wishes and not allowing relatives to pressure them into doing something they did not want.
The grandmother had the right to decide who would be part of the wedding. However, contacting a child directly and threatening to remove her from the wedding party crossed a line.
By refusing the demand, the parents showed their daughters that their feelings and personal choices mattered.
Their decision to skip the wedding may seem extreme to some relatives, but they felt it was the best way to avoid further stress.
The real problem was not the length of the girls’ hair. It was the grandmother’s refusal to accept their decision.
In this case, the mother was not wrong (NTA) for standing by her daughters. The girls should not have to cut their hair against their wishes to make someone else happy, even for a family wedding.
