AITA for Treating My Stepson Better Than My Biological Child?

A woman found herself questioning her actions after her husband accused her of treating one of his children better than the others. She had married a man with three teenage children and never planned to take on the role of their mother. Still, she tried to build a good relationship with each of them.

Over time, she became much closer to her stepson, Tom. They enjoyed many of the same things and found it easy to spend time together. Their bond grew naturally, and she often felt more comfortable around him than the other children.

She also got along well with her stepdaughter, Jane. Although they weren’t as close, they had a friendly relationship and rarely had problems.

Things were different with Andi, her other stepchild. The two had very different personalities, interests, and political views. The woman felt that Andi often kept their distance, even when she tried to get closer.

She didn’t dislike Andi, but their relationship never became as warm as the one she shared with Tom.

The problem came to light during Christmas when the family exchanged gifts.

The woman had picked out something different for each child. Tom received an antique vase he had admired for some time. Jane got a kitchen appliance she had asked for. Andi, however, received a $20 gift card.

While Tom and Jane seemed pleased with their presents, Andi looked disappointed.

Her husband soon noticed the difference and brought it up with her. He felt the gifts showed that she cared more about Tom and Jane than Andi. He also worried that Andi might feel unwanted or less important in the family.

The woman was surprised by his reaction. She explained that she had chosen the gifts based on what she knew each child liked. Since she spent more time with Tom, she knew exactly what would make him happy.

She also knew what Jane wanted because Jane had asked for it.

With Andi, things were harder. They didn’t talk much, and she wasn’t sure what gift would suit them. She thought a gift card would let Andi choose something they actually wanted.

Still, she admitted that Tom was her favorite.

She didn’t believe there was anything wrong with feeling closer to one child than another. In her view, people naturally form stronger bonds with those who share their interests and enjoy spending time together.

She also felt that being a stepmother was different from being a biological parent. She had never promised to replace the children’s mother or treat every relationship exactly the same.

However, her husband saw things differently. He believed that even if her feelings weren’t equal, her actions should not make any child feel less valued.

After hearing criticism about the Christmas gifts, the woman began to think more about the situation.

She realized that giving Tom a thoughtful antique, Jane something she wanted, and Andi a small gift card could send the wrong message.

Even if she hadn’t meant to hurt Andi, the difference between the gifts was hard to ignore.

She accepted that she could have put more thought into Andi’s present. Asking about their interests or choosing something more personal might have helped.

The woman still believed that her bond with Tom was natural and that she couldn’t force the same closeness with every child.

But she also understood that her actions mattered, especially when dealing with teenagers who might already struggle to feel accepted in a blended family.

In the end, she wanted to keep building good relationships with all three children. She didn’t expect every bond to look the same, but she hoped to be more careful about how she showed care and support.

The Christmas disagreement left her facing an important question: Is it wrong to feel closer to one stepchild, or does the real problem begin when those feelings affect how the children are treated?
